A scientific seminar dedicated to World Biologists’ Day has been held

As part of a series of seminars organized by the Student Scientific Society (SSS) of the Faculty of Biology, a scientific seminar entitled “The Life of a Biotechnologist: A Journey Through Industrial Biotechnology, Biodiversity, Bioeconomy, and Scientific Communication” was held on the occasion of World Biologists’ Day.
At the seminar, Stefano Bertacchi, PhD in Industrial Biotechnology, Associate Professor and researcher at University of Milano-Bicocca, delivered a presentation. In his talk, the speaker analyzed the development dynamics of biotechnology from the laboratory to industrial application. Referring to his personal scientific experience, he emphasized that the role of the modern biotechnologist is not limited to scientific research alone, but also requires active engagement in economic and social spheres. During the presentation, the adaptation of science to contemporary challenges and its practical application were highlighted as key themes.
Within the framework of the meeting, the efficient management of waste biomass based on the biorefinery concept — including coffee residues, tree bark, and other materials — was discussed in detail. The professor explained the process of producing bioplastics, vitamins, and aromatic compounds through genetically modified microorganisms. The participants’ attention was drawn to the contributions of these technologies both to the preservation of biodiversity and to the reintegration of raw materials into industrial circulation.
At the end of the seminar, the speaker spoke about his activities as a Youth Ambassador for the bioeconomy at the European Commission and emphasized the importance of scientific communication. He noted that presenting complex scientific topics to a broad audience in simple and understandable language is of particular importance in the modern era. In this context, he also shared his experience gained through the books he has authored.
The seminar concluded with a discussion of solutions to biotechnological challenges beyond the laboratory and with answers to participants’ questions.
Rasim Abbaszadeh, Chair of the Student Scientific Society of the Faculty of Biology, delivered remarks expressing gratitude to the guest professor and emphasized that such scientific events will continue to be organized on a regular basis.
