A competition titled “EcoDay-2025” was held at the Faculty of Biology in honor of World Environment Day
An exhibition-format competition titled “EcoDay-2025” was organized by the “Bioteam” club of the Faculty of Biology at Baku State University (BSU) to mark June 5 – World Environment Day. The aim of the event was to promote environmental awareness among students, highlight the importance of recycling, and strengthen a sense of ecological responsibility among young people.
The event was attended by Afat Mammadova, Dean of the Faculty of Biology; Ramin Samedov, Head of the Department for Humanitarian Issues and Youth Policy; Vusal Mammadov, Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Physics; department heads, faculty members, and students.
More than 20 handmade works were displayed at the exhibition. Most of these pieces were created using recyclable materials. Many of the artworks were painted with natural dyes, which further emphasized the ecological nature of the event and attracted great interest from the participants. While artistic freedom was encouraged, participants were required to submit a written explanation of their works along with a list of materials used.
Based on the results of the judges’ and participants’ secret voting, second-year biology student Zeynab Abdullayeva was awarded first place for her work titled “Pacific Ocean, Silent Storm”; Kenan Huseynzadeh received second place for his work “Reviving Battery”; and physics students Aishanur Mayilzadeh, Gunes Ibrahimli, Huseyn Mammadzadeh, and Sema Huseynova received third place for their work “Spectrometer.”
Speakers at the event drew attention to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 12 on responsible consumption and production. It was emphasized that achieving these goals requires accountability not only from producers but also from consumers. Food waste, plastic pollution, and irrational consumption habits pose serious challenges to the environment and society today. Therefore, fostering ecological awareness and changing behaviors is considered essential.
The “EcoDay-2025” event not only provided students with an opportunity to showcase their creativity but also encouraged them to take a more active stance on ecological responsibility and work towards a sustainable, green future.
