In 1984, he was admitted to the Faculty of Biology at Azerbaijan State University with an “excellent” grade in a competitive exam. During his studies, he was a recipient of the “Lelin Scholarship” and graduated in 1989 from the same institution (now Baku State University) with a Diploma of Excellence.
In 1992, he defended his candidate’s thesis on the topic “Molecular-genetic characterization of beta-globin gene mutations in the population of two regions of Azerbaijan”, receiving approval and a diploma from the Moscow Higher Attestation Commission. In 1999, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor.
He defended his doctoral dissertation in 2004, earning the degree of Doctor of Biological Sciences, and in 2009, he was conferred the academic title of Professor.
Since 2019, he has been serving as the head of the Department of Genetics. He is the author of nearly 130 scientific publications, several textbooks and teaching materials, a monograph, teaching programs, and methodological guidelines.
He has been a deputy of the IV (2010–2015), V (2015–2020), and VI (2020–present) convocations of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
