Since 1948, he worked as a laboratory assistant at the Department of Plant Physiology of Azerbaijan State University. Starting from 1954, he served as a junior researcher, senior researcher, and head of laboratory at the Scientific Research Institute of Crop Production of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences. From 1971 to 1990, he was the head of the creative group on photosynthesis physiology, head of laboratory, head of department at the Institute of Botany of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, and academic secretary of the Division of Biological Sciences of the Academy.
On November 7, 2010, he was re-elected as a member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan from Constituency No. 62 (Saatli District). He was the head of the Azerbaijan–Federal Republic of Germany interparliamentary working group.
