A scientific seminar was held at the Faculty of Biology
A scientific seminar was organized at the Faculty of Biology of Baku State University, featuring a presentation by Samira Shafiyeva, Associate Professor of the ICESCO Department of Biomedical Materials.
The seminar was dedicated to the topic “The Role of Microbial Communities in the Self-Purification of Aquatic Ecosystems”.
The presentation emphasized the leading role of microbial communities in aquatic ecosystems—including bacteria, archaea, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and microscopic fungi—in nutrient cycling and the maintenance of ecological balance. It was noted that these microorganisms actively participate in the breakdown of organic and inorganic pollutants, thereby ensuring self-purification processes in river, lake, and marine ecosystems.
It was also highlighted that a high level of microbial diversity accelerates the restoration of water quality, regulates oxygen balance, and reduces the ecological impacts of pollution. At the conclusion of the seminar, it was emphasized that microbial communities provide an important scientific basis for ecological rehabilitation and biotechnological approaches.
The seminar was attended by faculty members of relevant departments, as well as doctoral candidates, master’s students, and undergraduate students, followed by brief discussions on the topic.
