A seminar on the topic “Staphylococcus aureus: A Serious Threat Facing Modern Medicine” was held at the Faculty of Biology, presented by Aygun Israyilova, a lecturer in the Department of Biomedical Materials. The event was attended by the faculty’s academic staff and students.

A.İsrayilova noted that the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus is considered one of the most serious threats to human health today. This pathogen, which causes a wide range of infections, is distinguished by its ability to develop multiple antibiotic resistance mechanisms, posing a major challenge for global healthcare.

According to current research, antibiotic resistance in S.aureus develops through several mechanisms, including: the synthesis of β-lactamases; acquisition of the mecA gene associated with methicillin resistance (MRSA); mutations in ribosomal RNA or DNA that alter target sites; and enzymatic inactivation of antibiotics. Additionally, changes in the structure of the bacterial membrane contribute to resistance to potent antimicrobial agents such as daptomycin.

These complex resistance mechanisms make S.aureus treatment difficult and necessitate the development of new, effective antimicrobial strategies. At the same time, the rapid spread of such resistant strains poses a threat to public health, underscoring the importance of ongoing epidemiological surveillance.

The seminar participants emphasized that the proper use of antibiotics and the application of scientifically-based approaches play a crucial role in preventing infections.
