Department of Genetics – History and Current Structure
Although the Department of Genetics was formally established as an independent department under the name “Genetics and Darwinism” in 1937, the subject of genetics had already been taught at the Faculty of Medicine since the founding of the university in 1919, alongside other subjects. After gaining independence as a department, its first head was the late Professor Mirali Abdulla oghlu Akhundov, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Honored Scientist (1937–1988).
