Department of Genetics – History and Current Structure

Although the Department of Genetics was formally established as an independent department under the name “Genetics and Darwinism” in 1937, the subject of genetics had already been taught at the Faculty of Medicine since the founding of the university in 1919, alongside other subjects. After gaining independence as a department, its first head was the late Professor Mirali Abdulla oghlu Akhundov, Doctor of Biological Sciences and Honored Scientist (1937–1988). He was succeeded by Professor Rauf Alekbar oghlu Guliyev, Doctor of Agricultural Sciences (1988–2019). Since 2019, the department has been led by Professor Kamila Ali Agha gizi Aliyeva, Doctor of Biological Sciences and a Member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Azerbaijan during its 4th, 5th, and 6th convocations.

In 2008, the department was renamed “Department of Genetics and Evolutionary Theory,” and since 2019, it has been known as the “Department of Genetics.”

Currently, the Department of Genetics includes 12 academic staff members and 3 support personnel. Among them are 3 professors (Doctors of Sciences), 7 candidates of sciences (PhD holders), 4 associate professors, 1 senior lecturer with a PhD degree, 2 lecturers, and 2 part-time (0.5 FTE) lecturers.

At the undergraduate level, the department offers courses in “Genetics,” “Genetics and Breeding,” “Cytology,” “Histology,” “Biology of Individual Development,” “Evolutionary Theory,” “Methods of Teaching Biology,” “Ecological Genetics,” and “Fundamentals of Curriculum.” At the graduate level, master's programs are offered in two specialties: “Genetics” and “Plant Genetics and Breeding.”

For the “Genetics” master's program, courses include:

  • Genetics of Immunity

  • Plant Breeding

  • Genetics of Evolution

  • Medical Genetics

  • Plant Genetics

  • Contemporary Issues in Biology

  • History and Development of Biology

  • Applied Mutagenesis

  • Research Methods in the Specialty

  • Characteristics of Living Organisms

For the “Plant Genetics and Breeding” specialty, additional courses include:

  • Breeding of Subtropical Plants

  • Breeding of Fruit and Berry Crops

  • Breeding of Vegetable and Melon Crops

Each year, 5 to 7 graduate students defend their theses and are awarded a master’s degree.

The department’s faculty members regularly deliver comprehensive lectures in genetics and have published over 30 textbooks and teaching aids, as well as more than 500 scientific articles in recent years. Department members have participated in over 30 international symposiums and conferences.

Staff members have been honored with numerous awards and distinctions, including:

  • “Order of Labor, 3rd Degree”

  • “100th Anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic (1918–2018)” Jubilee Medal

  • “100th Anniversary of Baku State University (1919–2019)” Jubilee Medal

  • The honorary title of “Honored Teacher”

  • “Teacher of the Year” award at Baku State University

  • Honorary diplomas from Baku State University and other recognitions.

In 1937, under the initiative and direct participation of Prof. M.A. Akhundov, the Museum of Evolutionary Theory was established within the department. Since 2021, this museum has operated independently from the Department of Genetics.
