The Department of Biophysics was established during the 1976–1977 academic year. The founder and first head of the department was Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Tofiq Huseyn oglu Mammadov, who led the department until his death in 1993. From 1993 to 2011, the department was headed by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Khanlar Dayyan oghlu Abdullayev, and since 2011, by Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Ralfrid Ahad oghlu Hasanov.
In our republic, the first Department of Biochemistry was established at Baku State University in 1940. The department was initially headed by Professor V.Malenyuk, followed later by H.Safarov and A.Abdullayev. In 1956, the department ceased its activity. However, in 1972, through the initiative of Professor A.A.Guliyev, the Department of Biochemistry was reestablished and functioned under his leadership until 2019.
In 2019, as part of a series of reforms, the Departments of Biophysics and Biochemistry were merged. The newly established Department of Biophysics and Biochemistry has since been headed by Professor Rovshan Khalilov.
Currently, the department employs 17 staff members, including 2 professors, 6 associate professors, and 3 lecturers.
The department conducts research on the biophysical, biochemical, and nanoscale mechanisms of stress resistance responses. Thanks to the scientific activity of the "Biotechnology" research laboratory operating under the department, significant experiments have been carried out in the field of algae biotechnology and the application of biotechnological capabilities in ensuring energy and food security. These studies have yielded practically valuable results. The department maintains close collaboration with several leading universities around the world.
